Westerville, Ohio, December 1, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — The Association for Financial Advice and Planning Education® (AFCPE®) has recognized 11 individuals, organizations, special projects and initiatives expanding access to personal financial resources and education across the country in its 2022 AFCPE Awards. More than 20 nominations were evaluated by peers, and winners were recognized specifically for their innovation, expertise and leadership in meeting the financial needs of communities.
“Now more than ever, our country faces personal finance challenges requiring Americans to make multiple financial decisions daily to stretch their dollars,” said AFCPE Executive Director, Rachel DeLeon. “Fortunately, AFCPE members, partners and community members have stepped up to ensure that Americans receive sound financial advice, tools and resources to help them make the best decision for their financial future. We are honored to recognize those who go above and beyond.”
The 2022 winners are based in South Dakota, Washington, Texas, Maryland, New Yorkand Pennsylvania, with national reach and impact, focused on underserved and neglected populations who benefit most from reliable personal financial resources. The group included professors, researchers, entrepreneurs, spouses and nonprofit leaders focused on reducing racial disparities in finances, normalizing financial conversations, improving financial preparedness in specific careers and broad financial literacy topics.
The 2022 winners include:
Fellow Distinction: dr. Dottie DurbandAFC®, Associate Dean for Studies and Professor/Professor of Personal Financial Planning at Texas University of Technology. Among his many professional accomplishments, Dr. Durband started the Peer Counseling Group at Texas technology, known as Red to Black, and was the lead author of the last financial advice book used in the industry today. She has been a member of the AFCPE for more than two decades and recently helped build the organization’s archives and financial advisory interviews.
Educator of the Year: dr. Axton Betz-HamiltonAFC®, assistant professor and coordinator of the undergraduate program in consumption at the School of Health and Consumer Sciences of South Dakota State University. Her primary research focuses on financial abuse within families, including family identity theft. His personal experience is detailed in his book, The less people know about us.
Advisor of the Year: Robyn MroszczykAFC® since 2008. Its focus on military finance has provided support to over 2,500 survivors, over 10,000 soldiers through Advanced Individual Training, garnered over 7 million views under the #AskRobyn name for the blended retirement system and will have lasting effects on more than 1 million soldiers and their families with the first standardized and mandatory joint military training in financial readiness.
Outstanding Financial Advice or Planning Center: Brunch & Budget®, founded by Pamela CapaladAFC®, CFP®, provides financial planning and coaching from a racial equity perspective and is on a mission to make planning affordable for the communities that need it most.
Outstanding Education Program: MAX by AccessLex® from the AccessLex Institute, the first multi-faceted personal finance program exclusively for law students.
